How To Avoid Overwhelm

In this week’s group coaching calls for members of my 10 week and Boardroom programs - we explored the traits of the people pleasing part of your personality.

We explored as a group the benefits as well as the limitations of this part of your personality.

It was a really interactive session and this is honestly one of the main parts of your personality that I see in my coaching work that leads to burn out, overwhelm and not enjoying the work you do.

Some of the benefits we explored of the people pleasing part of your personality:

  • Allows you to be genuine and approachable.
  • Ensures you do great work for your clients.
  • Helps your team and your clients to like you and enjoy doing business with you.
  • Helps you develop rapport and great relationships with those around you.
  • Ensures good repeat business from your existing clients.

PS - mind blown moment!! We also explored how this part of your personality can help you be incredible at marketing, sales and BD as it helps potential clients to like you and to feel safe with you which leads to them giving business to you!! This was a new concept for most on the call.

Some of the limitations which we also explored of the people pleasing part of your personality:

  • You put the needs of others ahead of your own.
  • You tend to say yes to everything that is asked of you - even if you don't have the time.
  • Avoids having hard conversations.
  • You do everything yourself and don't ask for help.
  • People tend to take advantage of you.

A really good indication that you have an overactive or dysfunctional people pleasing aspect to your personality is that you're continually getting to the end of the day tired, with no energy and generally feeling jaded about things.

Now, as with everything, the first step is awareness.

Grab a pen and paper and write down your honest answers to the following questions:

  • How do I feel about having hard conversations?
  • How do I feel about setting boundaries with others?
  • How do I feel about putting my own needs ahead of others?

Your answers to the above, will give you a really good gauge as to how strong (and potentially dysfunctional) your people pleaser is.

Let me know how you go and as always, if you need help, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
