How To Build Resilience

This week I went live on LinkedIn and talked about the steps to building resilience.

At the moment your team, your business and the industry in general needs leaders who are resilient. 

We need leaders who can stay calm, focused and rational in moments of crisis and in prolonged periods of uncertainty.

Mental resilience isn't something that we obtain overnight or by hanging out in a cave by ourselves for 2 years. It's something we build over time and it's absolutely a skills we can learn. 

Here are the 4 steps I covered in my live video to building resilience and mental toughness: 

  1. Lean In
    Instead of running, hiding or shying away from difficult or uncomfortable situations or situations that require effort and energy - do the opposite. Lean in! Look at them as opportunities to learn something new, grow as a person and develop yourself as a leader. 
  1. Stay Present & Conscious
    When you're in the midst of difficult or uncomfortable situations, it’s a natural human response to want to go unconscious or remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible. Again, I'd like you to do the opposite. Try and stay as present and as conscious in the situation. This is so you can observe yourself and your responses as well as learning and growing in the process. 
  1. Reflect
    After the difficult or uncomfortable situation is over. Spend some time alone with yourself reflecting on how things went. What worked? What didn’t'? What did you learn about yourself? What will you do differently next time? 
  1. Lean In Again
    Always be looking for opportunities to get uncomfortable. Look for situations that put you outside of your comfort zone and push you.

This is the only way you will teach yourself, over time, to get better at dealing with crisis and having the ability to step up and stand up and be the resilient leader you know you can be and that the people around you need you to be.
